Princeton
Repertory Company was founded in 1984 and is a professional
theatre company operating under a Small Professional Theatre
Contract with Actors' Equity Association. The Rep has earned
accolades for its innovative programming that includes site-specific
stagings, New Jersey premieres of new plays, and exciting,
thought provoking and highly accessible productions of Shakespeare's
plays.
In 1995, in keeping with
our tradition of making theatre accessible to underserved
and new audiences, Princeton Rep inaugurated the free Shakespeare
in the Square Festival. A unique arts/business partnership
with Palmer Square Merchants continues to make these weekend
performances possible.
In the summer of 2000, the
Rep expanded its Shakespeare Festival to a full season opening
with A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Taming of the Shrew
playing to enthusiastic audiences of more than 14,000. The
Company also received its first national review in USA Today.
The impressive growth of the Princeton Rep Shakespeare Festival
is due in part to the sustained lead sponsorship of Fleet
Bank.
Major funding for the Shakespeare
Festival has also been provided by The Times Newspaper, Mercer
County Cultural and Heritage Commission/New Jersey State Council
on the Arts/Department of State and the Mereville Foundation. |
